I know we are living in a world of technology. I get it! What I don’t get is how can people still drive and text after all of the horrible accidents and innocent lives that have been lost by this ridiculous practice. I must admit, I have glanced at a text that I received while at a red light. It’s never something that is so urgent, that it cannot wait until you arrive at your destination. I had an overwhelming feeling of guilt and have since made a promise to myself that I will not even look at a text until I am safely off of the road.
While on my way to work this evening, I was stopped at a red light on a major Bucks County road. I glanced over to my left and noticed a young girl, who had her leg up on the dashboard, texting away, oblivious to the traffic around her. I beeped my horn and gestured for her to stop texting. As the light changed to green, all of the traffic moving, I could see her in my rearview mirror. Her car hadn’t moved. She obviously had no regard for the drivers’ around her.
I have a seventeen year old daughter who is learning to drive. I am not looking forward to the day she gets her license. I am fearful of all of the distracted drivers out there, young and old, who are putting the people that I love in harms way. I do not know what the answer is. Hopefully, the laws will become stricter to deter people from texting while driving.
There are some insurance companies that have their new drivers sign a promise not to text while driving. I think this is a great idea! Even though this is not foolproof, it is a start. Please do your part to educate as many people as possible about the dangers of texting and driving. Make a promise to yourself that it is not a practice that you will be engaging in. You will be saving lives, maybe even your own..
